There is a long history of controversy around the corset as a fashion item. The controversy largely revolves around the corset's association with feminine subordination and conformity. Because of this, ladies in the middle class and working class in the Victorian era were willing to wear corsets often. Their need to regulate excess and desire through self-regulation is regarded as one of the reasons behind their desire to wear a corset. A woman's ideal shape is thought to have been aided by a corset, especially the tiny waist, which is closely associated with social status and riches.
