Fly Plaid

A somewhat larger version of the contemporary kilt was known historically as the "great kilt." It was made from nine yards of fabric, which was wrapped around the body and knotted in front of the shoulder when it reached the shoulder. This shoulder component eventually came away from the kilt and became what is now known as the fly plaid. You should incorporate a fly plaid into your ensemble for a fantastic kilt effect.

The more traditional Féileadh Mòr (Great Plaid), worn throughout the Scottish Highlands, is the ancestor of the modern Fly Plaid. The great plaid was a big piece of material that was belted about the waist and partially draped over one's shoulder.
